‘Treacherous’ icy roads contribute to several early-morning crashes on I-89

CONCORD, NH – On Dec. 28 at approximately 6:54 a.m., the New Hampshire State Police from Troop D responded to I-89 north in Concord for a report of several motor vehicle crashes.

State Police units found three passenger cars involved in separate crashes along with four tractor-trailer units which had jack-knifed and crashed, blocking all lanes of traffic on I-89 north between Exits 2 and3. Additionally, a large box truck driving north became involved in these crashes. Fuel was spilled from two of the tractor-trailers. As a result, the Department of Environmental Services responded to the scene to assist in the cleanup.

A storm front consisting of snow and freezing rain had moved through the area, causing the roadway to become covered in ice making driving treacherous. The ice-covered roadway contributed to the cause of these collisions.

No one was injured as a result of these crashes and no enforcement action was taken against any of the drivers involved.

The northbound lane of I-89 was shut down for more than an hour and a half until a lane could be opened for traffic to pass. Traffic on I-89 north was diverted off of the interstate at Exit 2 during that time. The left lane remained shut down for several hours until the fuel spill was contained and a fully loaded tractor trailer could be off-loaded and removed from the scene.

The Concord Police, Concord Fire and Rescue, and the NH DOT and DES assisted the State Police at the scene.
