LISBON, MAINE — Robert Card is dead.
The suspect in a statewide manhunt connected to a mass shooting that left 18 people dead, Card’s body was recovered in Lisbon, Maine late Friday, according to Maine Public Safety Commissioner Michael Sauschuck.
Police held a press conference at Lewiston City Hall Friday at 10 p.m. with basic information. A more detailed press conference is set for 10 a.m. Saturday.
Sauschuck reported that Card died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. His body was found at about 7:45 p.m. Friday Sauschuck said during the news conference. His body was recovered near the Androscoggin River about 10 miles from Lewiston where the Wednesday night shootings happened.
More details, including when they believe Card died, would be forthcoming. Priority was notifying the families of victims as well as Card’s relatives, Sauschuck said.
Police had been searching for Card, 40, of Bowdoin, Maine, since Wednesday night after 18 people were killed and 13 left injured in back-to-back shootings at two locations in Lewiston – Just-In-Time Recreation and Schemengees Bar & Grille.
According to the Portland Press Herald, Card’s body was found near a recycling center where he once worked. The area is less than a mile from the boat launch in Lisbon where Card’s Subaru was found Wednesday night.
Law enforcement partners from neighboring New Hampshire had been assisting in the search for Card. Last Friday New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu issued the following statement after the news of the discovery of Card’s body had circulated:
“Grateful for the efforts of Maine State Police who led the manhunt to bring closure to this challenging search. Thanks to the men and women of our own New Hampshire State Police for their tireless assistance. It is time for the communities in Maine to heal and I hope the families of this tragic situation can heal in peace.”
