Women’s Volleyball
It took five sets, but the Hawks won New Hampshire’s Battle of the Birds on Saturday over Franklin Pierce.
The Hawks and the Ravens traded set wins until sophomore Nique D’Ancona (Corte Madera, Calif.) started a 4-0 run with a pair of kills in the final set, breaking an 8-8 deadlock and helping Saint Anselm get the narrow victory.
Freshman Michele Henwood (Guaynado, Puerto Rico) had 47 assists, following an 82-assist effort last week that gave her the Northeast-10 Conference Setter and Rookie of the Week award.
The Hawks now stand 9-6 on the year coming into today’s contest against Bentley.
Field Hockey
Nobody can score on the fourth-ranked Hawks, as Saint Anselm still has not allowed a single goal over their first seven contests.
Saturday’s victim was New Haven, with the Hawks taking a 6-0 win.
Sophomore Carly LaCasse (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) had two goals, with senior Hannah Friend (North Easton, Mass.), freshman Maeve Murphy (Scituate, Mass.), freshman Shelby Dunn (Yarmouthport, Mass.) and freshman Maggie Malloy (Canton, Mass.) adding the other goals.
Hawks goaltender Julia Hand (Reading, Mass.) picked up her 13th career shutout, receiving some help from a defense that did not allow a single New Haven shot during the contest.
LaCasse and senior Anna Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) were both named Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week.
Tonight, the Hawks participate in a Queen City Cup contest against SNHU, bringing a 5-0 conference record and a 7-0 overall record with them.
Cross Country
The women’s team finished first at the Bruce Kirsh Cup in Hopkinton on Saturday, thanks to top ten finishes by freshman Christine Toy (Standish, Maine), senior Mag Dimastrantonio (Shapleigh, Maine) and freshman Delaney Flanagan (Bedford, N.H.).
For Saint Anselm, Saturday’s results mark the first time since the 2011 season in which the Hawks have claimed a first-place team victory. The Hawks entered the race ranked fourth in the East Region, according to the USTFCCCA, and edged four fellow Northeast-10 Conference institutions on the 5K course.
On the men’s side, senior Anthony Galasso (Reading, Mass.) led the way with a time of 27:41.8
Saint Anselm will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, competing at the NEICAAA Cross Country Championship in Boston’s Franklin Park.
