Penmen need late heroics for Sunday victory

RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Southern New Hampshire University Penmen men’s basketball team needed some last-minute heroics on Sunday to leave Felician University with an 87-85 win.
Things stayed close in the first half, with the Penmen entering the break with a 35-32 edge that proved to be short lived. A 13-5 Felician run began the second half, and despite getting a series of baskets from senior Daquaise Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) and junior Eamonn Joyce (Medford, Mass.), SNHU could not bridge the gap as the Golden Falcons answered with a 13-5 burst.
Felician’s lead rose to 15 points with 7:58 left in the contest, culminating with a free throw by senior Rahsaan Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Williams could have built the lead up to 16 points with his second attempt, which instead turned into a defensive rebound for SNHU junior Shawn Montague (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.)
Montague contributed a momentous dunk on the other end 14 seconds later, beginning SNHU’s slow return that concluded by a layup from Daquaise Andrews with just four seconds left on the clock.
Andrews (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 31 points. Montague also ended in double figures with 15 points and 13 blocks. Joyce did as well, finishing with 23 points. Andrews’ 31 points move him past Elijah Bonsignore (2011-15) and Joey Castronovo (1989-93), and into 27th place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 1,365 points. Andrews also added fifth double-double of the season is the 15th of his career, while Montague’s double-double is his sixth with the Penmen.
For Felician, junior Zamir Wright (Newark, N.J.) led the way with 22 points.
The Penmen have now won all six meetings between the two teams.
Southern New Hampshire University returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 9 (7:30 p.m.) when they take on Pace University.
