On Memorial Day: Thanking my lucky stars that our nation is the best place on the planet to live and raise a family
A Memorial Day message from Sen. Lou D’Allesandro, D-Manchester.

The Memorial Day weekend is a time to spend a moment reflecting on why we have this holiday and what it means to the families and friends of those who made so many sacrifices. These sacrifices allow us to live in peace and in a place where we feel safe. To many, the “greatest generation” is just a phrase but to those who were alive in those years, it has a very personal meaning.

As I reflect on this Memorial Day, I thank my lucky stars that my family is well, that my life is what it is, and that our nation is the best place on the planet in which to live and raise a family. To those who lost a loved one in battle or in giving service to our nation or our community, we say a big “thank you”.
There will be parades in small towns and big cities, and families will get together and enjoy a good time. This is also a time to reflect on what we can do to help our community fight the drug problem that affects so many families. We should also consider how we can perform some public service to help improve our state and our nation.
We must be thankful for all we have and share that good feeling. The election season gives me cause to reflect on what is next and how we can make a difference.
