Memorial Day: Honor a loved one by adding a photo or remembrance to our gallery

MANCHESTER, NH – Monday May 25 we will take a break from work and school to officially recognize Memorial Day.

Historically, it started as Decoration Day, a fixed holiday on May 30, so named in 1868 as a day to break from the routine of life and honor our Civil War dead by decorating their graves.

Much about how we celebrate this day has changed over time, including when we celebrate, and even the holiday’s name.

Too many of us take for granted the opportunity to remember those who have served and died. We sleep in, plan a picnic or barbecue, head to the beach or the mountains for some relaxation and family time.

And that’s all good.

But especially now that so many of us here at home understand, first-hand, the sacrifice made by those who serve in the U.S. military, we thought it would be great way to put into words what we might forget to say the other 364 days of the year.

Those of you staying close to home can come out for the annual Memorial Day Parade in Manchester on May 25. Parade kicks off at 2 p.m. Road closures will begin at 1 p.m. at Elm Street in the area of Webster Street. All of Elm Street, from Clark Street to Granite Street, will be closed at 1:55 p.m. to allow for the parade to travel down Elm Street. If you need to travel east or west across the city please do so via any street south of Granite Street.

You can also attend the Fisher Cats game afterward, where Navy SEAL Blake Marston of Bedford will be honored during a special pre-game ceremony. Marston was killed in January during a training exercise.

No matter what you end up doing, as you prepare for your Memorial Day holiday weekend, consider taking a moment to share your photos, remembrances or poems here, as a special dedication to your special someone.

Send your submissions to robidouxnews@gmail.com, or text them to 603-930-0640 and I’ll add them to a special Memorial Day gallery, which you can share on Facebook.

Please include: Your Name and the name of your loved one, and when they served. We’ll keep the memorial wall up through May 30.
