Manchester man jumps to his death from overpass
Richard Newton, 40, of Manchester, was identified as the victim by NH State Police.


MANCHESTER, NH — On July 15, 2019 at approximately 10 a.m., Troopers from the New Hampshire State Police, Troop B and Officers from the Manchester Police Department responded to a report of a pedestrian climbing the fence located on the South Willow Street overpass to I-293.
On arrival, it was learned that the pedestrian, 40-year-old Richard Newton of Manchester, had climbed over the chain-link fence and jumped down into oncoming, southbound traffic. Newton was struck by two vehicles that were traveling southbound. The two vehicles were described as a white F-250 pick-up operated by 38-year-old Brad Desrochers of Fitchburg, Mass. and a red Ford Eco Sport operated by 49-year-old Cheryl Fuentes of Derry.
Newton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the New Hampshire Medical Examiner’s office. No injuries were reported by others involved in the incident. Traffic on I-293 was diverted off of exit 1 across South Willow Street and back onto I-293 South for approximately two hours while the scene was processed.
