Man dead, Bedford neighborhood briefly ‘shelters in place’ after Galloway Road incident
Police say the gas was intentionally turned on inside a residence on Galloway Road, and a man with a knife was found in the garage.
BEDFORD, NH – Bedford Police issued a “shelter in place” advisory Tuesday afternoon after officers and firefighters responded to a medical call on Galloway Lane during which they discovered a gas line had been intentionally cut.
At approximately 1:10 p.m. on July 9, police and fire units responded to Galloway Lane to check on an adult male. Responding police officers and firefighters found a male subject in the garage with a large knife. Officers and firefighters also detected a very strong odor of gas.
Concerned that an explosion could occur, officers and firefighters retreated, established a secure perimeter, evacuated the immediate area and issued a shelter in place advisory to neighbors.
Bedford officers subsequently approached the scene along with tactically-equipped firefighters and determined the man was dead, and the environment at the scene was safe for first responders. Police say the gas line was intentionally cut inside the residence.
As soon as the scene was secured the shelter in place advisory was lifted. There is no danger to the public related to this incident which remains under investigation by the Bedford Police Department.
“Foul play is not suspected,” said police department spokesman John Guilfoil. The cause and manner of death is part of the ongoing investigation, he said.
