Litter of kittens discovered in aftermath of Penacook Street fire

MANCHESTER, NH — Firefighters made an unusual discovery after knocking down a fire on Penacook Street Thursday: A litter of two-week-old kittens suffering from smoke inhalation.

Five kittens were discovered in the aftermath of the March 5 fire at 41 Penacook St. The mother cat was seen running out of the house during the fire. The kittens were brought to the Veterinary Emergency Center of Manchester, 336 Abby Road, in Manchester  where they are still being treated. One of the kittens  did not survive, according to the Manchester Animal Shelter, which has taken custody of the remaining kittens, after they were surrendered by the owner.

Thursday night the mother cat returned to the home looking for her kittens.  She has since been reunited with her kittens at the Emergency Center.

The owner was notified that the mom cat was found, and told the shelter that she would like to have the mother cat returned once the kittens are weaned.

Once medically released the mom and kittens will go to a temporary foster home until the kittens are eight weeks old and they can be spayed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped by the shelter, including the mother.
