June 18: Groundbreaking ceremony set for Manchester’s newest park on Elm Street

Lamont Hanley Park will be located at the corner of Bridge and Elm, at 1140 Elm St.

June 18: Groundbreaking ceremony set for Manchester’s newest park on Elm Street
The new park will be located next to Lamont Hanley and Associates on the corner of Bridge and Elm Street. Currently, the space is an undeveloped lot owned by the City of Manchester. On December 4, 2018 the Mayor and Aldermen approved a request to turn the lot into a gateway park entering downtown from Bridge Street.“I drove by the Lamont Hanley building every day and thought that would be a great place for a mural, said Sara Beaudry, Executive Director of Intown Manchester. “I reached out to the property management company, REI Service Corporation, and they put me in touch with Michelle Hanley who currently owns 1138 Elm Street. We talked about the mural and Michelle, an avid gardener, thought a mural depicting an outdoor scene would be a wonderful addition to the location.”To beautify the space further, Beaudry spoke to Mayor Joyce Craig and reached out to Don Pinard, Director of Manchester Parks and Recreation and Chris Sullivan, Park Planner, who put together a beautiful rendering of what a park might look like in the space.The rest is history. Between REI and the Hanley and Lamont Families, enough money was raised to put in a beautiful park for the city to enjoy. This was a fine tribute to their husbands, Jack Hanley and Joe Lamont, who recently passed away.“I would like to thank Intown Manchester, REI Service Corporation and Mayor Craig and aldermen for their time and hard work in making this park project a reality, says Michelle Hanley. Jack was always a proponent of the continuing growth, beauty and prosperity of downtown Manchester. This park is a wonderful tribute to both him and Joe.”“Joe and Jack would have been very humbled by this honor,” added Rita Lamont.  “Joe was always a big proponent of small business in Manchester. The creation of this park for all to enjoy would have pleased him immensely. I would like to thank everyone involved for their efforts in making this happen.”“By developing an underutilized lot into a park, we’re giving people who live and work downtown a green space to get some fresh air and relax,” said the mayor. “I can’t thank Intown Manchester, Lamont Hanley and Associates and the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department enough. This is a wonderful example of a public/private partnership to update and renovate green spaces that we have replicated across our city.”“The mural will be the cherry on top,” says Beaudry. “Keith Trahan, a local Manchester artist, will create an incredible mural that will certainly add to the significance of the park and will be a welcome splash of color to those who visit Manchester or those who want to grab lunch and enjoy it at the new Lamont Hanley park.  The park and mural are set to be complete by early August 2019.
