Danger zone: Icy roads cause problems for Sunday drivers across NH
Freezing rain advisory in effect until 7 p.m. At about 11 a.m. NH DOT closed 293 South due to multiple accidents. Travel in and around Manchester was equally hazardous, with reports of cars sliding through intersections and off roadways due to the freezing rain, which created slick icy roads.
State police urge motorists to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
MANCHESTER, NH — Freezing rain and low temperatures created dangerous driving conditions throughout the Granite State on Jan. 18. State Police troopers were on the move, responding to constant calls for service, everything from cars skidding off the roads to accidents with injury.
The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory for the Manchester area, which was to remain in effect until 7 p.m. Temperatures were expected to rise enough for the icy rain to diminish by evening, according to the advisory.
Despite NH DOT dispatching salt and sand trucks en force, rain continued to freeze up on contact with road surfaces, sustaining dangerous travel conditions.
In addition to icy roads, reports of major “puddling” along roadways also was contributing to traffic trouble spots.
A back up on I-93 just north of the Hooksett tolls was reported at about 2 p.m. (see photo at left) due to numerous accidents.
State Police reported closure of I-93 North and South at the junction of I-89 at Exit 12 at about 2:30 p.m.
Manchester Ink Link readers were checking in to report “sheer ice” conditions in all directions north and south of Manchester. Karin Cevasco said at 3 p.m. travel between Nashua north to Manchester was becoming icy. “Best to drive slow,” Cevasco said.
State Police are asking that motorists stay off the roads unless there is an urgent reason for travel.
