MANCHESTER, NH — University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension STEM Docents and SEE Science Center are teaming up for the Creative Computing Challenge, an app-building event for Manchester area youth taking place throughout February.

Beginning on Feb. 2 from 10 a.m.-noon, STEM Docent volunteers will guide youth through the basics of mobile app development to help them build apps and change their world.  Registration is open at see-sciencecenter.org and the program takes place for four weekends.

Want to share photos with friends? There’s an app for that. Want to learn to play mahjong? There’s an app for that. Want to test out what color you should paint your living room? There’s an app for that, too! Youth will use MIT’s App Inventor to discover how apps work and how to build them.

“It’s really eye opening to see how much goes into a simple app. It’s really neat to design an app I can show my family,” said a past participant. Careers in programming and other STEM fields are growing. Learning how apps work, and how to build them, is an important skill for youth to develop.

UNH Cooperative Extension STEM Docents is a volunteer education program based at UNH Manchester. Volunteer docents are trained in positive youth development techniques and teaching science, technology, engineering and math. To learn more, visit extension.unh.edu/stem-docents.
