Penmen brothers face off for tennis title

It’s September 20, 2019 and here’s what’s been going on lately in the Southern New Hampshire University athletic program.

Field Hockey

Outside of women’s tennis, the only Penmen action on Tuesday came from field hockey, where ninth ranked SNHU defeated Saint Michael’s, 2-0.

The game remained deadlocked heading into the second half, with freshman Lisa Hagel (Driehuis, The Netherlands) and sophomore Meaghan Wile (Littleton, Mass.) providing SNHU scores in the third and fourth quarters, respectively.

Hagel was named the Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week earlier in the afternoon, recording six shots on the day.

Southern New Hampshire continues Northeast-10 Conference play on Saturday (September 21) when it heads to Pace University for a 4 p.m. tilt with the Setters.

Men’s Tennis

Two brothers entered, but only one remained.

Senior brothers Willem Van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) and Bas van Biezen (Sassenheim, Netherlands) met in the finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Regional Championship on Monday in Flushing, N.Y.

Willem won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.

The brothers also participated in doubles play, falling to Franklin Pierce sophomore Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) and freshman Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain).

Men’s Soccer

The Penmen dropped their first game of the season, falling 2-1 against Wilmington (Del.) University on Wednesday.

Freshman Sinisa Sprecakovic (Mannheim, Germany) scored his first career goal just 3:26 into the contest.

However, SNHU’s Kiko Hernandez was sent off in the 28^th minute, with Wilmington equalizing on an own goal in the second half followed by a winner from Joe Bell (Surrey, England) just a few minutes later.

Hernandez was not alone, with the match referees issuing seven additional cautions throughout the contest.

The Penmen return to action Saturday, Sept. 21 (7 p.m.) when they play host to in-state rival Franklin Pierce University at Penmen Stadium.
